HCP's mission is to increase society's understanding and appreciation of photography and its evolving role in contemporary culture. HCP strives to encourage artists, build audiences, stimulate dialogue and promote inquiry about photography and related media through education, exhibitions, publications, fellowship programs and community collaboration.

Education is at the core of HCP’s mission. Through outreach programs, fellowships, classes, workshops, lectures and group discussions, HCP endeavors to excite and educate the community about photography as an artistic medium and a tool for cultural investigation. HCP offers more than 275 educational events annually, several of which are free and open to the public.
